Ali from Travel Made Simple Talks To Us

Find out what Ali from Ali’s Adventures and Travel Made Simple made of Copenhagen when she visited us last month.

Travel Made Simple

Ali set up Travel Made Simple as a website to help with taking the hassle out of travel, from planning and saving up to resources for on the road. She has published books on travel and has 20 years experience of traveling every continent. Her goal is to help you with making travel simple, from fears about traveling solo or which destinations are easy for first time travelers. Ali lives as an ex-pat in Germany and is currently traveling in Europe.

We interviewed her here on what she thought about our great city and of course, Copenhagen Downtown Hostel. Here’s what she said..

"So Ali, what was the first thing on your list for Copenhagen?"

I’ve started making it a habit to look for food tours everywhere I travel. They’re fun, and I find them to be a really interesting way to try new foods and learn about the food culture and history of the destination I’m visiting. I thought I would find tons of fish dishes listed on the itineraries of food tour companies in Copenhagen, but I quickly learned there’s a lot more to Danish cuisine than fish.

"What is the biggest misconception about Hostelling?"

People have a preconception about ages in a hostel. Most, but certainly not all, hostels cater to a younger crowd. That said, I once stayed at a hostel in New Zealand where I was the youngest person in my 4 bed dorm room for a week. At the time, I was 31 years old, and the other women were in their 40s and 50s, one was even on a business trip. Go figure.

"What was your impression of Copenhagen Downtown Hostel?"

It turned out to be a great central location to base my exploration of the city.

"Did you meet some locals? What was your impression?"

They are amazing! So warm and welcoming and the Danes know how to have a good time.

"What tips would you give to someone planning a trip to Copenhagen?"

Stay somewhere central, and go on the Free Walking Tour on your first day to familiarise yourself with the area. It is the perfect introduction to the city.

"What advice would you give to someone thinking about staying in a hostel?"

If you’re not 20 years old and looking for a party, read reviews and descriptions carefully. Hostels with nightly drink specials, organized pub crawls, and costume or theme parties will be miserable for you. But some hostels specifically state that they are a quiet place without all the chaos. On the other hand, if you’re young, traveling solo, and hoping to meet people, a more social hostel will be perfect for you.

"What did you like about Copenhagen Downtown Hostel?"

The best feature about the hostel is the laid back atmosphere and sense of community you provide. It's perfect for solo travelers and small groups. Mealtimes can be very social. Whether you're traveling alone or with other people, go hang out in the hostel’s bar or restaurant and strike up a conversation. You could end up with a fun 30 minute chat or a new best friend.

We completely agree! We often get feedback that it's a great place to meet people because of the communal areas and free dinners. People find it a good place to chill out and meet our International crowd!
