Visiting Christiansborg Palace

If you’re exploring Copenhagen, the Royal Christiansborg Palace is a must-see to have a glimpse of living history in Denmark since it was built in 1167. While the current rebuilt palace is less than 100 years old, it sits on Slotsholmen (Castle Island), the historic centre of royal power for over 800 years - since 1167. The palace has been rebuilt three times, with the current version completed in 1928. Today, it serves both the Danish Queen for official events and the Danish Parliament, giving visitors a unique experience of Danish royalty and government.

Christiansborg Palace is located right in the heart of Copenhagen on Slotsholmen (Castle Island). It’s only a short walk from the city centre — including Strøget (the main shopping street) and Copenhagen Central Station. From the hostel head to  Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square) or Strøget, it’s about a 10-minute walk. Just head towards the canals, and you’ll see the tall palace tower rising above the skyline.

The palace is open for tours when it’s not in use for official functions. Make sure to check the official Christiansborg Palace website for current visiting times and ticket prices and some cool videos of what it's like.

Tower Views

Taking a tour around the castle you start outside - and the most iconic part of the palace is the spiralling towers, seen from all over the city. One of the highlights is the palace tower, which offers panoramic views of Copenhagen. From here, you can spot church spires, the Tivoli funfair rides, and even the iconic Little Mermaid statue in the harbour.

The Royal Reception Rooms

These grand chambers are still used for state visits and royal banquets, filled with ornate decorations, priceless artworks, antiques, and glittering chandeliers. Visitors can admire the exquisite craftsmanship and imagine the palace in full ceremonial use.

The Throne Room

In the Throne Room the Queen still receives foreign royalty and dignitaries. The thrones date back to 1660, with the king’s throne guarded by golden lions and the queen’s by griffons. This room is also used for gala banquets and the New Year palace celebration.

The Great Hall

Decorated with “The Queen’s Tapestries,” this Baroque-style hall is the largest room in the palace and still hosts grand events.

The Velvet Room

Covered in 300 meters of pink velvet (recently replaced), this room was inspired by luxurious King Louis XIV’s bedroom in Versailles.

The Alexander Room

A smaller, elegant room used for intimate dinners and events with the Danish Armed Forces.

The Royal Stables

Dating back to 1740, the stables still house the royal horses. Among the highlights there is the Golden State Coach, adorned with 24-carat gold leaf.

The Palace Chapel

Built in 1826, the chapel hosts royal weddings and events. Its architecture draws inspiration from the Pantheon in Rome and Greek temples. It was briefly damaged by fireworks in 1993 but has since been beautifully restored.

The Royal Kitchens

You can even tour the Royal Kitchens! Recently opened to the public, the Royal Kitchens showcase one of Europe’s largest collections of copperware and are furnished as they were in Christian X’s day. The kitchens once hosted royal banquets for up to 275 guests, offering a rare peek into the grandeur behind royal dining.

Christiansborg Palace is more than just a building; it’s a living piece of Danish history where royal heritage, government, and culture come together! Check it out if you have time for a day trip from Copenhagen.
