The Best Vegan Places to Eat in Copenhagen

Plant Power is more than a trend, and Copenhagen has some outstanding places to enjoy vegan cuisine, with choices to suit all budgets. From burger joints to raw food cafes, here are our favourite plant-based restaurants in the city to tempt your taste buds!

Copenhagen has been a leader in Nordic Cuisine the past decade, famous for both its farm-to-table food culture and award-winning chefs, but did you know it’s also one of the best vegan-friendly cities in the world? Denmark’s culinary capital is one of best places to experience quality vegan food and still enjoy local food culture - even our famous polse hotdogs come vegan!

Why Copenhagen is Great for Vegans

Copenhagen has around 300 vegan-friendly cafés and restaurants, including Nordic tastes, vegan fine-dining, street-food, and everything in between. Prepare to treat your tastebuds to a vegan experience, Danish style!

The city is packed with interesting food choice for every buget - from fancy fine dining to street food markets - there is something for everyone. The best places to just try different things are the food markets, and you can choose from the stalls at Torvehallerne to the food trucks at Reffen Street Food Market. And of course the bakeries!

For a central choice with a lively atmosphere try Torvehallerne Market - right by Nørreport Station. Here you can try hearty falafel wraps, Spanish tapas, fresh colourful bowls and vegan pastries. Also great for buying fresh produce and local ingredients for a picnic. For bakery treats try Landbageriet, a traditional bakery with plenty of choices, or Café Kaf for pastries and cakes.

Street Food - Casual Vegan Dining

The easiest way to pick up some food in Copenhagen is at one of the many street food markets - you can also see what you’re getting and chat with the friendly stall owners to find out more about their food - many support local and seasonal produce and create their menus in a sustainable way - always good for the planet!

DØP (Den Økologiske Pølsemand)
This vegan organic hot-dog has won awards! Like a traditional Danish pølse /hot-dog cart, you can get a dog with all the toppings - gherkins, onion crispies and vegan sauces with your tofu or veg versions. Must try!

Reffen Food Market

Copenhagen’s favourite street food market, with food stalls, music, DJs, crafts, cultural events, and great sunsets! Take in the views across the water, relax on a deck chair, and enjoy the vibes.

Argentine, Nepalese, Korean, Afghan, Senegalese, Pakistani - there are so many flavours here with world cuisine that you will be blown away (maybe by the spice as well). Many of the stalls have vegetarian dishes but for vegan you have a few main choices…

Grab a fresh juice at Green Garden, or a delicious flavourful curry from Everest. Buddha Rolls serves rolls and Pan-Asian spicy street food. And Awasana gives a taste of Afghan food - try the signature slow cooked beef and rice.

Semo Pizza serves up Roman and Neapolitan pizzas with vegan cheese and ingredients - run by Manu and Andre serving up the best pizza in Copenhagen.

White Rabbit

Grønsagen
Grønsagen in Christiania has plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes, with a garden and cosy cafe atmosphere. It’s a quirky spot, and good value - popular with locals for lunch and dinner.

Bistro Verde
Near Nyhavn, this plant-based joint has been serving up casual vegan food and working with plant-based start-ups. Try their SMØRREBRØD with crispy parsnip “fish” fillet and vegan caviar! Or their small plates, including truffle fries, bean puree or miso medley.

Plant-Based Fancy Restaurants!

If you are not on a budget then there are some fine dining restaurants for a special occasion or a spendy plant-based meal!

Beyla
(Photos above and below). In the Carlsberg City District this is a fully vegan and gluten-free café with a whole selection of tasty plates to try.  Also the people behind vegan favourites Bistor Lupa, Souls in Torvehallerne Market, Restaurant Ark and Funga Farm. They have an insane menu here - with ’soy ricotta’ and jam on sourdough bread, or stuff Banh Mi, Mushroom waffles, Beyond Meat cheese burger sliders, and that’s just at lunch. For creative food and really unique tastes, this is definitely a place to visit.

Bistro Lupa
This bistro in Østerbro is also part of the Ark Collection but more casual although still high quality. They have a cosy atmosphere and great food!  Their lunch menu (12.00-14.30) is 499 DKK per person for an appetiser, 2 starters, a main course and dessert.  Note there is a 3.75% charge on using foreign cards to pay!

Ark Restaurant
Famous - and not budget friendly! The food here is really special (and expensive)- it’s beautiful, sustainable, and has a Michelin Green Star - the first to be awarded in Denmark. They have a set menu at 1299 DKK per person with 9 to 13 servings. You can add wine to this with a full pairing menu. If you can’t afford to eat here maybe come and have a cocktail - Shiitake & Sake Martini?  Check out the menu here

And "Must Try" ... Danish Vegan Ice Cream!

Moo Moo Isobar Nordhavn
Plant-based ice creams and also litre boxes to go! Vegan ice cream and gluten free - and even a selection of sugar free ice creams! Moo Moo is a family run business and dedicated in making great ice cream (from coconut milk mostly) and “to show compassion and love towards the planet” - we love them too!

ISTID - nitrogen ice cream!
Our favourite Jægersborggade’s ice cream parlour that serves up the most delicious concoctions! These are organic, and made from nitrogen with a million flavours. With sorbets based on seasonal berries and normal ice cream there is something for everyone, but the vegan ice is amazing. They use liquid nitrogen to freeze the ice cream instantaneously, preserving all the flavour. You have to try it!

Banana Cph
In the same trendy street - this place takes bananas that are about to be thrown away and uses them to create banana based food - including ICE CREAM. Surplus bananas create plant-based ice cream - from strawberry to (banana) and vegan chocolate - saving the planet once ice cream at a time! We love it. They also have cakes and chocolate.
