Take a Day Trip to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Copenhagen has an impressive number of world-class art galleries and museums to explore in the centre of the city, but also just 40 minutes train ride from the centre of town, there is an internationally renowned gallery set on the cliff overlooking Sweden; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

With an impressive permanent collection of international and Danish art, including the well-known Giacometti Gallery and largest collection of contemporary art in Scandinavia; Louisiana also holds some ground-breaking exhibitions. The museum blends art installations with their strong architecture and landscaped sculpture garden to create a unique space. Recent shows have included US photographer Taryn Simon, Japanese visionary Tetsumi Kudo and Danish artist Per Kirkeby.

One of our favourite places to explore, chill out, be inspired, and generally enjoy the amazing architecture, views, landscaped gardens, and artwork. Worth the scenic train ride, and you can get a combined train and entrance ticket from the central station. A great place to spend half a day or immerse yourself in art! ** As with all galleries and museums in Denmark, you need your Corona Pass to enter.

Current Exhibitions

The exihibition Jerichau is taking place from 28th October 2021 until 6th March 2022, with work from the short life of modernist artist Jens Adolf Jerichau. An influential Danish artist of the early 20th century, Jerichau copied the Great Masters of art, and retold the classical myths in representations of modern life through his colourful paintings.

Landscapes – British architect Peter Cool

Part of the Louisiana on Paper series this exhibition runs from 21st January until 8th May. The exhibition presents Cook’s fantastical drawings from the 60s onwards and his ideas for theoretical buildings, many of which were never built. One of his visions that came to fruition was the art gallery in Graz, Austria, the Kunsthaus which became known as “The Friendly Alien.” Although many of his avant-garde ideas for buildings never went beyond his paper drawings, he became influential in his notions of how to create through architectural vision.

Yayoi Kusama Installation

One of the most popular installations of modern art in Louisiana since 2008 is the Kusama installation Gleaming Lights of the Souls that has been replicated for sold out exhibitions of the Japanese artist’s work worldwide. Here in Copenhagen, you can see it all year round! The room is filled with colour-changing lights, mirrors, and a floor of water, to create an infinity of light reflections. Stand in the middle of this 4mx4m room and experience the pulsing light show!
