Like a Local: Exploring Østerbro Neighbourhood in Copenhagen!

If you’re looking for something a little less on the tourist map, then try one of our “Like a Local” neighbourhood guides - this time we look at the charming are of Østerbro. When visitors think of Copenhagen, they often picture the colorful Nyhavn harbor, Tivoli Gardens, or the bustling shopping streets, but for those who want to experience a quieter, more authentic side of the city, Østerbro is a hidden gem worth exploring. A leafy and peaceful neighborhood with a relaxed pace of life, Østerbro combines charming streets, local cafés, cultural spots, and budget-friendly finds - all perfect for travellers seeking a local vibe. And it’s an easy walk from our downtown location.

The first place to check out is taking a stroll along Svanemøllen Beach and the lakes - perfect for autumn leaves and the scenic parks. This is a great place for a slow morning pace. This is not a neighbourhood that is known for its nightlife, but if you want to feed the ducks, you’re in the right place!

Coffee & Snacks

For breakfast or brunch, Østerbro is full of cozy cafés that won’t break the bank.  For something quick and tasty, try Paludan Bogcafé, our favourite bookshop/café where you can relax in a quiet and comfy library vibe. The Living Room Coffee serves delicious coffee and snacks in a chilled space, a student favourite with low sofas. Café Guldhornene shows live sports and has table football to play on.

If you’re here early and looking for brunch then check out Cafe Ermanno - they have delicious healthy boards of all the usual brunch menus including pastries, fruit, smoked salmon and muesli. It is super cosy inside and serve great coffee, and has seats outside also.

Budget-conscious travelers will also enjoy street food options at Fælledparken on select days, or Smag København, a small café serving sandwiches, open-faced smørrebrød, and daily specials for under 80 DKK. Local bakeries, like Lagkagehuset are perfect for grabbing a Danish pastry on the go.

Cinema, Castles & Vintage Markets

Østerbro is the best neighbourhood for shopping all things vintage, and you can find plenty of treasures at the fabulous Sunday market “Veras Market under Buen”. There is plenty of everything here in fact - designer clothes, retro accessories, strange vintage pieces, ice skates - all kinds of things. The market takes place every Sunday.

In Østerbro you can also snap up some pre-loved clothes in “Time’s Up Vintage” which has some retro piece and also sometimes Scandinavian design pieces! Another place to check out for retro clothing fans is “Wasteland Vintage” - packed full of pieces along with shoes and accessories also.

For film lovers you can check out the little indie cinema Parkteatret that shows independent movies alongside international films. There are also plenty of small art galleries in the side streets here, mostly of Danish artists, and you can wonder around and find something different.

For a dip into Copenhagen’s history - Kastellet is one of the best-preserved star-shaped forts in Northern Europe. Here you have scenic views over the city’s harbour.

For Foodies

If you fancy a bite to eat then Østerbro has a variety of casual spots to grab a bite. Café Papirøen serves snacks and sandwiches, and the famous DØP (Danish Økologiske Pølser) is perfect for the iconic budget-friendly hotdogs, but the eco-friendly and even vegan versions. For something more substantial, Restaurant Palæo offers healthy bowls with locally sourced ingredients that aren’t too expensive.

For a cosy evening joint, check out one of the many neighborhood cute bars or cafés. Østerbro Bryghus is one of them - if you like craft beers head to this little brewpub, they also serve food. Small wine bars like Ved Stranden 10 provide a relaxed atmosphere where you can find plenty of locals hanging out. Østerbro doesn’t feel like it’s part of a big city, so it’s the perfect area to have a relaxing evening.

If you’re looking for a calm neighbourhood where you can discover something unique, then this might be the neighbourhood for you. Charming cafes, parks and green spaces, and some interesting markets and shops. If you’re in Copenhagen for a longer stay, then choose to enjoy the slow exploration of Østerbro for a rewarding and authentic Danish local-living experience.
